How are fall trees affected by summer weather

i know i am researching different ways in which we can experiment using food, but walking around campus for the past two days has got be asking the question, even though the leaves are starting to fall off the trees in preparation for the fall, does the summer weather affect the process by any means. I want to believe that it doesn’t, but the other day i was walking outside, and saw that the leaves that were falling off the trees were very dry looking, and looked as the though the hot weather was the cause. This might be a very unusual question to ask, but but i have always wanted to look into how fall trees are affected by summer weather.
